Is it legal to unlock your phone?
Cell phone unlocking was explicitly made legal in the United States in 2014. This occurred after a period of ambiguity when a special DCMA exemption expired in 2012.
Every three years, the Library of Congress reviews the specific rules of the Digital Millenium Copyright Act (DMCA) and makes exemptions allowed under the law. In 2006, the Library decided that phone unlocking should be exempted under DMCA. But that decision was reversed in October 2012, when the Library did not renew the exemption.
After the exemption was allowed to expire, over 100 thousand US Citizens signed a petition on the White House's "We The People" website requesting the cell phone unlocking be made legal again. The White House agreed with the petitioners and responded as such: "The White House agrees with the 114,000+ of you who believe that consumers should be able to unlock their cell phones without risking criminal or other penalties".
Following the White House's response, several bills were tabled by congress members to address the issue, however the Unlocking Consumer Choice and Wireless Competition Act is the one that actually made it all the way through. It was signed into law by President Obama on August 1, 2014.
Is it safe to unlock my phone? Can I damage it or void the warranty?
Yes, it is completely safe to unlock your Galaxy S5. Unlike "jailbreaking" or "rooting", unlocking is a safe, standard process that is built into the phone by the manufacturer. Other than allowing you to use the phone on another network, unlocking doesn't alter the behaviour of your phone in any way.
Does unlocking require techinacal skills?
No it does not. The steps are simple and straight-forward and we provide written instructions and a video!
Which Carriers/Networks are supported?
Galaxy S5 phones from almost all GSM carriers/networks across the world can be unlocked using an unlock code. This includes carriers like AT&T, T-Mobile, Cricket, Rogers, Telus, Bell, O2, EE, Vodafone, Globe, Digitel
and many, many more.
Please note however that phones from CDMA carriers such a Verizon, Sprint, Boost and US Cellular are not supported.
How do I know if my S5 is locked?
The best way to tell is to borrow a SIM card for another carrier from a friend or family member an put it in your phone. If you are prompted for a network unlock code when you restart the phone then your phone is network locked. We recommend that you try this before purchasing a code.
How long does it take to get the unlock code?
Code delivery times range from a few hours up to a few days depending on the delivery speed selected.
I forgot my password and I am locked out of my phone, can you help?
No, a network unlock code is completely unrelated to your phone's password or pin code. There is no code that can be purchased online to replace a forgotten password.
